Anthony Santander’s stint with the Toronto Blue Jays has been a grand disappointment thus far. The right fielder was hitting just .179 before going down due to left shoulder inflammation. Santander will surely be looking to turn things around upon his return. Here, we will look at when Santander is projected to be back in the Blue Jays lineup. We will offer a potential date for his return.
🚑 When will Anthony Santander return and be back with Blue Jays?
Santander was placed on the 10-day IL back on May 30, and he received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his left shoulder on June 3. Left shoulder inflammation was the official designation, but Santander had also been dealing with inflammation in his left hip.
Shoulder inflammation is an injury most commonly associated with pitchers, so it’s tough to get a real gauge on a timeline for Santander’s return. However, the PRP injection Santander received at the beginning of the month will speed the process of his return. The fact that he is already back throwing is a good sign.
The Blue Jays have offered nothing in the way of a real timeline for Santander’s return, but sometime around the MLB All-Star break seems to be reasonable given how long he has already been out. The 30-year-old will likely need a couple of weeks to ramp up once he resumes hitting.
Here is a look at Toronto’s schedule just prior to the break, and right after.
- Wednesday, July 9: Toronto Blue Jays at Chicago White Sox
- Friday, July 11: Toronto Blue Jays at Athletics
- Saturday, July 12: Toronto Blue Jays at Athletics
- Sunday, July 13: Toronto Blue Jays at Athletics
- Friday, July 18: San Francisco Giants at Toronto Blue Jays
⏳ How long will Anthony Santander be out for?
Shoulder inflammation is a very broad term. A player can return from mild shoulder inflammation within a few weeks. Major issues, like shoulder impingement or a rotator cuff tear, can mean months on the shelf.
Cincinnati Reds second baseman Matt McClain and former Houston Astros slugger Michael Brantley are recent comps when it comes to MLB non-pitchers that have dealt with shoulder inflammation. McClain had shoulder inflammation in spring training 2024 and thought he would miss just a handful of days. Unfortunately for McClain, the injury was much worse than initially feared, and he had to get season-ending surgery to repair cartilage damage and the labrum in his left shoulder.
Brantley’s issues with shoulder inflammation were equally as brutal. The Astros shut down Brantley in May 2023 with shoulder inflammation and he did not return to the Houston lineup until late August of that season. It should be noted that Brantley battled shoulder issues for much of his career.
Santander has not had any major previous shoulder issues and has been relatively healthy throughout his MLB career. From 2022 - 2024 with Baltimore, he played in over 150 games each season.
Of note, New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga received a PRP injection, like Santander had, in late February of this year and was able to pitch by the start of the regular season game for the Mets. Santander has already been out of action for 25 days.
